Dr. Christina Hewes, DVM, MS, DACVS
Dr. Christina Hewes DVM, MS, DACVS is a native of Woodside, California, who grew up riding hunter /jumper horses. She attended veterinary school at the University of California, Davis, followed by an internship at Washington State University. In order to pursue a special interest in lameness and surgery, she completed a three year surgical residency at the Marion duPont Equine Medical Center in Leesburg, Virginia while completing a Master's Degree with a thesis on suspensory ligament injury while there.
Dr. Hewes returned to California in 2006 to work in surgical and sport horse practice then, in 2008, became a clinical instructor in equine surgery at Auburn University in Alabama, and completed an emergency and critical care fellowship while studying there. She became a board certified surgeon in 2007 and will be eligible to take the emergency and critical care boards in 2011.
Her primary clinical interests are managing lameness in English and western performance horses, treating emergency cases, colic, tissue surgery, and treating neoplasia. She has a special interest in the treatment of suspensory ligament injury and also the use of absorbable chemotherapy beads for the treatment of tumors.
Dr. Hewes describes her greatest concern is to manage the performance goals of the owner with the treatment of the horse, then to see those injured horses return to performance. She has had excellent results with many types of horses including hunter/jumpers, dressage, eventing horses, barrel horses, cutters, Standardbreds, reining horses, and gaited horses.
Christina's hobbies include running, hiking, riding horses (all types), and traveling.
